Centennial celebration
fundraising starts
CHIEFLAND -- The city of Chiefland is
celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2013. A working group has been established
to plan for a two-day celebration. The celebration date has been set for Friday
and Saturday, April 5-6, 2013.
A street dance is planned for that Friday night, and
there will be a community fish fry dinner. Saturday’s events consist of hog and
turkey calling, horseshoe throwing and croaker sack race contests, chili and
barbeque cook-off, pie and cake baking contests.
A vintage parade will add to the events -- as will a
huge fireworks display on Saturday evening. Historic trade demonstrations will
be set up for all to view. There will be many old photographs and historic
video interviews of some of local resident.
Community organizations such as the Woman’s Club,
Chiefland Rotary and Suwannee Valley Rotary and businesses like Central Florida
Electric Cooperative have agreed to manage individual events. City employees
have been asked to organize the street dance on Friday night.
Funding for the celebration will come from
sponsorships, fundraising events and donations. Some of the fundraising events
planned are an auction of centennial commemorative coins and keepsake books
filled with old photographs.
The following fundraising events have been scheduled
by city employees:
June 2, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at City Hall –
Multi-Department Yard Sale – This will be held by the building and zoning
office on the same day as the Watermelon Festival.
July 20 – Pie and Cake Auction – Spaghetti Dinner –
Dinner will be $5.00 per person for spaghetti, salad, roll and drink. The
auction will immediately follow dinner. Calendar this event and plan to enter
your favorite cakes and pies. Through advertising and word of mouth this event
should be a great success and a lot of fun!
October – Jail and Bail – The police department will
organize this event, of course, so beware… you better have a good bail bondsman
